After the Second World War, the export of clay from the German clay mining areas became increasingly important. From the mid-seventies, clay transports towards Italy, to the northern Italian regions with the ceramic industry, were increasingly shifted from trucks to rail. In Era V, the transports were organized by subsidiaries of Deutsche Bahn. The trains travel around 900 km from the German Westerwald via Switzerland to Italy.
