Class 50 played an important role especially in East Germany, 354 of these locomotives remained in the Soviet occupation zone at the end of the war.
Over time, many locomotive-tender combinations were created. After their elimination, they were often supplemented with new tenders of the 23.10 and 50.40 series. However, since there was no continuous rear wall, this combination was not very popular with the staff, especially in winter.
